Henry Baird, 34, plead guilty to two counts of aggravated assault on May 20th, 2002 in a New Jersey Superior Court. Baird and Brian Neilsen, 24, are accused of breaking into the apartment of Donald and Kara Butler and beating them with baseball bats. Baird admitted to beating Donald Butler, who is black, in an effort to intimidate him because of his race. Baird will serve at least 14 years in prison before he is up for parole but will not be charged under the state’s hate crimes statute pursuant to a plea agreement. According to Burlington Country prosecutors, both Neilsen and Baird are members of an unnamed white supremacist organization. Neilsen is facing charges of burglary, possession of unlawful weapons, and making terroristic threats. His trial date has not been set (Philadelphia Enquirer, May 21).
